PBS is a simple, water-based salt solution. It is isotonic and non-toxic for most cells. PBS includes sodium chloride and phosphate buffer and is formulated to prevent osmotic shock.
DPBS includes potassium chloride which is slightly different than PBS. DPBS is available with or without magnesium and calcium and is used in many different biological applications.
HBSS is used as buffer systems in cell culture media and is often used atmospheric conditions. HBSS may be used to maintain osmolality and pH in biological applications.
