Fetal Bovine Serum (FBS) is the most commonly used serum for cell-based applications which are an integral part of cell culture, vaccine development, and drug discovery as it provides the most nutrients for the widest range of cell types. FBS provides critical growth factors for optimal performance of cell cultures and cell growth.

FBS often contains the antibiotic tetracycline (TET) and researchers using very sensitive tet-inducible gene expression systems encounter problems with unintended expression as a result. Captivate Bio's TET-Free FBS (also known as TET-System Approved FBS or TET-approved), is tested to ensure the absence of detecting trace-level tetracycline and doxycycline residues that may interfere with gene expression and cellular function, making this serum ideal for sensitive applications.

Features

  • New in vitro TET detection assay developed for increased reliability and relevance for sensitive assays
  • Undergoes functional, cell-based assays to verify absence of tetracycline or its derivatives
  • Delivers quicker workflows and increased consistency when working with TET-inducible expression systems
  • Cells can be maintained in standard FBS and introduced to TET-Free FBS in the critical days prior to running assays
Research areas using TET-Free FBS

Neuroscience Produce GABAA receptors for electrophysiological study
Cancer research Quantitatively control PVT1 expression in bladder cancer
Drug screening Establish cell line with inducible Glutamate receptor
Vaccine development Research for the safer virus vaccines
Gene editing CRISPR/Cas9-mediated control of NFAT5, PVT1 and ANRIL

FAQs

What testing method is used to qualify FBS batches as TET-FREE?

FBS Tet-Free uses an in vitro induction testing method. This method involves incubating sensitive reporter cells that have been engineered to express firefly luciferase in response to tetracycline for 24 hours. Batches that exhibit luciferase activity at or below baseline levels are confirmed to be devoid to detectable tetracycline or its derivatives. By using this functional testing approach, researchers can be confident that the chosen TET-Free FBS batches will provide optimal control over their tetracycline-inducible gene expression systems and minimize potential background noise or unintended expression.

Do you offer discounted or free samples of FBS for lot validation?

Yes, depending on the type of your inquiry we may offer a free sample for validation purposes only. However, please note we will charge a shipping and handling fee. Please contact our customer service team at orders@captivatebio.com for more information.

Do you provide other FBS products in addition to US and USDA origins?

Yes, in addition to US and USDA origin premium FBS, we offer a wide range of specialty serum including heat-inactivated, gamma-irradiated, and TET-free, and exosome-depleted FBS. For Australian or New Zealand FBS, please contact our customer service team at orders@captivatebio.com for more information.

What is the difference between US origin and USDA origin FBS?

USDA origin FBS is collected in countries which have been approved by the USDA for bovine serum importation into the United States. US origin FBS comes from USDA licensed abattoirs located entirely within the continental U.S. Certificates of Analysis are available with all FBS purchases. Supplementary Certificates of Origin are also available upon request.
