Normal Calf Serum

Normal Calf serum is derived from clotted whole blood collected from calves older than 20 days and less than 8 months used. As the calves age, their immune systems produce more antibodies, which results in higher antibody levels in normal calf serum. Additionally, growth factor levels in normal calf serum are lower than in FBS, making it less potent for supporting cell proliferation. Therefore, normal calf serum is recommended for cell culture applications where the high growth factor content of FBS is not necessary, however the cells require specific proteins or higher levels of antibodies.

Each manufactured batch is rigorously controlled, from the collection of serum and throughout all stages of its treatment, centrifugation and production through to final packaging. Once serum is collected, it is sterile- filtered at 0.2µm. All batches are tested for endotoxin and mycoplasma levels, specific virus tests (BVD), hemoglobin and total protein levels.
