Heat-Inactivated FBS is suited for immunological work and intended for researchers who want to avoid confounding effects, for example in immune response studies using immune cell culture.

The heat inactivation process is to destroy heat-labile components such as complement that may adversely affect the growth performance of cell cultures. Serum is inactivated for 30 minutes at 56°C which also inactivates viruses and destroys some bacterial contaminants such as mycoplasma.

Since heat inactivation of the serum may, to some extent, decrease the growth performance properties of the serum, this procedure should only be performed if actually required for optimal cell growth. Researchers should evaluate the applicability of heat inactivation in regards to their own application. If heat inactivation is required, the process should be carefully controlled to avoid increased formation of crystalline and flocculent precipitates, gelling of serum proteins and excessive loss of growth performance. Significant damage to serum can occur when it is subjected to higher than required temperatures or heated over extended lengths of time.

FAQs

Do you offer discounted or free samples of FBS for lot validation?

Yes, please contact our customer service team for details where we will work with you on your specifications. Please note we will only hold lots for 14 days.

What is the shelf-life of FBS?

Most FBS products that are stored appropriately have a 5-year shelf-life. Please refer to the expiration date noted on the product label and the Certificate of Analysis provided at time of purchase for FBS batches you received.

Do you provide other FBS products in addition to US and USDA origins?

Yes, in addition to US and USDA origin premium FBS, we offer a wide range of specialty serum including heat-inactivated, gamma-irradiated, and TET-free, and exosome-depleted FBS. For Australian or New Zealand FBS, please contact our customer service team at orders@captivatebio.com for more information.

What is the difference between US origin and USDA origin FBS?

USDA origin FBS is collected in countries which have been approved by the USDA for bovine serum importation into the United States. US origin FBS comes from USDA licensed abattoirs located entirely within the continental U.S. Certificates of Analysis are available with all FBS purchases. Supplementary Certificates of Origin are also available upon request.
